Counter-stamped New York & Rhode Island State Quarters by Daniel Carr
At the time these were designed and
minted, the US Mint's policy was not to include the coin designer's initials on
the coins.
Only the US Mint sculptors who finalize the designs have their initials on
them.
Daniel Carr designed these coins for the US Mint in 1999 (and the designs were
actually minted in 2001).
Since the coins never originally had Daniel Carr's initials, on the occasion of
the 25th anniversary of designing them (in 1999),
coins acquired by Daniel Carr in 2001 are being counter-stamped with the round
"DC" logo in 2024.
A special backing die is used to reduce distortion of the Washington side
opposite the location of the counter-stamp.
