“1887-CC” Morgan Pattern – Production Blog
All are over-struck on genuine Morgan Silver Dollars of 1878-1921.
The original design concept patterns for the Morgan Dollar were produced in 1877 in several formats including dimes and half dollars. They featured an inner beaded circle on the obverse, and a completely different Eagle (left-facing) on the reverse. The Carson City Mint produced Morgan Dollars with “CC” mint marks from 1878-1885 and 1889-1893. No “CC” Morgan Dollars were produced during the years: 1886; 1887; 1888.
This “1887-CC” Morgan concept is a tribute to the original patterns of 1877, and also the 3-year gap in production at the Carson City Mint.
No original Morgan Dollars were minted in 1887 with a “CC” mint mark, and none of the original pattern design were produced again after 1877.
