Moonlight Mint.
1905-S, 1906-D Morgan Dollars
Production Blog
All are over-struck on genuine US Mint Morgan Silver Dollars (circa 1878-1904).
A few of each type were broad-struck or multi-struck with significant coin shift between over-strikes.
No genuine Morgan Silver Dollars were minted during 1905-1920.
The 1905-S represents a what if ? scenario where the San Francisco Mint produced Morgan Dollars for another year after stopping in 1904.
The Denver Mint first began striking coins in 1906. But no silver dollars were struck there until 1921. Had the Denver Mint struck silver dollars in 1906, they would have looked like this 1906-D over-strike issue with a large wide D mint mark like all the other 1906 Denver Mint coins had.
NOTE: These are NOT endorsed by the US Treasury. Defacing of US coins is legal so long as the defacement isn't for fraudulent purposes.
