Continental Dollar production research test strikes – Production Blog

In 2022 a research project involved testing 1776 Continental Dollar striking. The purpose was to help determine the true origins of the original coins.

The three test dies used (engraved by Daniel Carr in 2022):

Continental Dollar obverse (Modelled after an original coin with “CURRENCY” and “EG FECIT”);
Continental Dollar reverse (Modelled after the same original coin with extensive die crack);

Tri-Leaf edge with raised text “RESOLUTE AMERICANA RR & RF” (tri-leaf design modelled after vintage Pillar-type 8-Reales).

Some of the 8-Reales coins were annealed at 1200 degrees (Farenheit) prior to over-striking.

Various tonnages were used in striking tests.
