“1881” Coiled Hair “Stella” – Production Blog

All are over-struck on genuine US Mint Liberty Head gold $5 Half Eagles (circa 1847-1908).

The only years that the US Mint produced $4 gold pieces was 1879 and 1880. Due to the high value of original “Stella” $4 gold pieces, these are over-struck on US Mint Liberty Head gold $5 Half Eagles (circa 1847-1908).
The over-strike reverse is noted with “100 Cents + Four Dol.” (which equals the host coin’s $5 face value) and “STRUCK ON A US | $5 HALF EAGLE”.

For the “1878” George Morgan and “1879” Grove Minting versions see the “Stella” sections here:

NOTE: These are NOT endorsed by the US Treasury. Defacing of US coins is legal so long as the defacement isn't for fraudulent purposes.

First produced January 2019.
Over-struck on genuine US Mint Liberty Head gold $5 Half Eagles (circa 1880-1908),
except three over-struck on earlier no-motto coins: 1847; 1855; 1856.
All were over-struck in a 22.5mm reeded-edge collar with coin-flip orientation.
Subsequently, some were lightly broad-struck out of collar and those examples
are slightly larger in diameter.
